Novoda at Charity Hack 2011

Myself, Carl and Kevin attended Charity Hack last weekend at the PayPal offices in Richmond. We’re pretty pleased with having created a fairly end-to-end solution in less than 24 hours.

Lovep.ie

We created a website and Android app for Lovep.ie! The concept is to allow the user to decide how much they can afford to donate, and then divide that amount between a selection of causes. We hope that this would make it easier for people to spread their generosity and include smaller charities and non-profit organisations.

History

Lovep.ie was a drastic simplification of an idea from a previous charity hack. We deleted the previous source and coded it from scratch. This time we made and Android app too, and that turned out to be a good opportunity to play with Roboguice for dependency injection.

Our solution

We used PayPal APIs and the PayPal mobile payments library to create a parallel payment, split evenly between the selected causes. MissionFish provided us some sample charity data and a method for making donations with PayPal through their service. It would, of course, also be possible to make PayPal payments directly to the causes from our app and website.

Future

We have ambitions to release Lovep.ie some time. Hopefully we can find some causes that would like to be involved.
